On June 1, Washoe County sponsored a special career day event at Glenn Duncan Elementary School. The day began with an assembly, followed by kindergarten through third grade students rotating through a variety of stations staffed by Washoe County personnel. The children learned about ways to help the community and potential future careers by exploring Animal Services, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Reno Fire Department. Later in the day, fourth and fifth grade students went to the Washoe County Complex for a presentation in the Commission Chambers to learn about local government. This experience provided them with knowledge of how different agencies serve our community.
Washoe County has been a proud Partner in Education with Glenn Duncan Elementary since 2013. Since that time, Washoe County staff has provided support for Glenn Duncan initiatives, such as mentoring opportunities, reading programs and funding to revamp the Glenn Duncan community garden. Partnerships like this provide students with resources to increase academic performance, open communication between schools and community organizations, and help them to be prepared for the workforce.
