RISE Academy for Adult Achievement Earns Accreditation

RISE Academy for Adult Achievement has earned its accreditation!  This is the first time in the 60-year history of adult education in WCSD that a school that offers adult learners the opportunity to earn their high school diploma or high school equivalency, has been accredited as a stand-alone school in the Washoe County School District.

AdvancED, the non-profit, non-partisan organization that has accredited other schools in our district, granted RISE’s accreditation this year. This agency combines school academic standards, stakeholder feedback, and student performance to measure institutional success. This was an extremely involved process that required RISE staff to collect data on student performance, conduct a self-assessment, survey stakeholders, and more. In addition, the process involved an external review conducted by a team of AdvancED evaluators who performed classroom observations and assessed a variety of other aspects of the school.

To give a little background, RISE Academy was formerly a part of Washoe High School. Three years ago the school relaunched with a new name and logo, campus locations, and school culture under the leadership of Principal Victor Sherbondy. With a more specialized and tailored curriculum for adult learners and a school environment similar to a community college, RISE is helping to create a more educated community in Northern Nevada.

Our area is growing rapidly and as new jobs are created, WCSD has a responsibility to provide an educated workforce so these positions may be filled. The English Language Learner program, High School Equivalency and Adult Diploma programs, Adult Basic Education, and High School Proficiency Exam preparatory classes offered at RISE truly assist students in their efforts to be college- and career ready at any age. With this newly accredited status, RISE prepares students more than ever before. Since the school’s restructuring, RISE is on track to grant more than 400 adult diplomas and more than 250 high school equivalency certificates.

Also this year, RISE has adopted the core values of Respect, Innovation, Strength, and Empowerment. These core values align the staff’s mission to: educate passionately with mutual respect while building strong relationships with students in order to ensure they reach their goals and continue on a forward path of success; educate through innovative instructional methods, materials, and technology while consistently adapting to student needs and education requirements; educate with integrity and relevant programming to provide a strong and accountable school experience for all students and educators; and to educate to empower adult learners in creating the life they want, and to empower educators in providing rigorous yet accessible education while adopting a growth mindset. These core values showcase RISE Academy’s commitment to providing the best education possible to adult learners in Washoe County.

We, at WCSD are proud to provide a quality high school education, free of charge, to all residents in Northern Nevada, and are thrilled that we can now call RISE Academy for Adult Achievement a fully accredited school!
