This past Monday I was honored to be part of the Sixth Annual Multicultural Senior Recognition Day. This annual event celebrates the diversity of our students with a special event for graduating students and their families. More than 100 high school seniors attended and heard from Dr. Paul Mitchell, recruitment and retention coordinator and professor at UNR in the Reynolds School of Journalism. He shared his admiration for the experiences of students of color and their strides to improve their outcomes through education.
The event highlighted the dedication of our students and professors in the Paiute Language Classes at North Valleys, Spanish Springs and Reed high schools to preserve the language and culture of our Paiute Tribe. Dancers from the local dance group Ballet Folklórico, brought wonderful music and colors to the event, highlighting the culture of our Mexican American community. By far the best part of that night was the individual recognition of the students who attended, for their successful high school completion and their plans for the future. All the students received a medal commemorating this special event and their accomplishments.
Congratulations to all the graduates and I can’t wait to see them again at their individual graduation ceremonies.
