Superintendent Davis spends time learning about Renown Health’s focus on education

Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Anthony Slonim, CEO of Renown Health, and his team about the work that Renown does to provide quality healthcare for our 8,000+ employees, as well as the commitment they have to educating our students about career opportunities in health care.  As I toured their main campus, I was impressed with the warm, collaborative atmosphere, the strong community focus they have cultivated, and their commitment to partnerships that support our community.

While I knew that Renown hosted some of our high school students who have an interest in entering the medical field, I was amazed by the variety of different types of jobs and careers available. The hospital, a small community unto itself, has jobs for every interest, skill, and ability.  For WCSD students, this means there are opportunities across all our career and technical education (CTE) and Signature Academy fields including agriculture, business, human development, information technology, music and fine arts, media, engineering, automation, culinary and, of course, health sciences.

Human Resources Director, Michelle Sanchez-Bickley, provided an overview of the services that Renown provides in the Reno-Sparks area.  She shared information about living-wage and entry level jobs they hire for that require only a high-school diploma.  Renown has a robust system of in-house training opportunities and tuition reimbursement plans to encourage employees to continue to their growth and advancement. This is a huge investment in their employees and in our community.

Michelle also highlighted the work Renown does with WCSD students for tours, job shadowing, and internships. They are working to connect these programs with their own employee training and apprenticeship programs to support students who want to build a career path with Renown before they graduate from high school.

During our tour, I got to speak with patient transport employees, facility managers, food-prep/dining staff, and a variety of medical professionals.  All of these conversations reflected the family environment and commitment to the highest quality health care, a culture that Renown has worked hard to create.

We, at WCSD, enjoy our strong partnership with Renown Health.  I look forward to our continued work and partnership with Renown. My thanks to the entire team at Renown Health for an interesting and informative visit.
