WCSD Celebrates the Critical Work of Teachers During Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation DayReno, NV (May 4, 2017) – The Washoe County School District (WCSD) Board of Trustees and District staff are celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week from May 7 through May 11. This annual event is designed to acknowledge the vital role of teachers in shaping the future of our community by supporting students and families.

“We are so fortunate to have generous, talented teachers who share their gifts with their students each and every day,” said Board of Trustees President Katy Simon Holland. “This week is set aside to honor and recognize their invaluable contributions to our society by drawing attention to their hard work and dedication to our children, and we are proud to work alongside them in support of our students every day.”

“My days as a teacher were among the most rewarding of my professional life,” said WCSD Superintendent Traci Davis. “I know how hard our teachers work to help our students succeed in their studies. But it’s more than that: teachers instill a love of learning that follows students throughout their lifetimes, setting them up for more fulfilling lives where they continue to advance their knowledge as they learn about the world around them. Teachers change the lives of their students forever, and we celebrate their work this week and all year long.”

In 1953, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt asked the U.S. Congress to establish a National Teacher Day. The National PTA established National Teacher Appreciation Week in 1985. The celebration is always held during the first full week of May, and the Tuesday of that week is National Teacher Day.
