Reno, NV (February 5, 2018) – WCSD School Board Trustee John Mayer has announced that he won’t seek re-election to the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees in the November 2018 election.
John Mayer is a lifelong resident of Sparks who has devoted his life to serving the children of Washoe County in a variety of roles including teacher, coach, principal, and trustee. In 2010, he was elected to the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees, where he has continued his personal mission of working to provide the resources every student needs to succeed in school.
“Trustee Mayer was instrumental in providing vision to draft a District’s Strategic Plan to ensure the District had a clear path to success,” said WCSD Superintendent Traci Davis. “He also makes time to visit the schools that he represents, as he enjoys talking with students about what they are learning while encouraging them to graduate and follow their dreams.”
Additionally, Trustee Mayer serves as a liaison to the WCSD Student Advisory Board, a role that he deeply enjoys as it allows him to listen to the concerns and suggestions of student leaders from District high schools who provide input, ideas, and advocacy to the Board. Trustee Mayer was honored as the Veteran School Board Member of the Year for 2017 by the Nevada Association of School Boards.
As a former teacher, he has a deep appreciation for students’ voices and encourages the participation of students in schools and District committees.
“These past eight years serving Washoe County students have been the most meaningful and fulfilling years of my public service life, and I want to thank the teachers and staff who work daily to provide the best education to our students,” said Trustee Mayer.
Mayer also served as Sparks City Councilman in Ward 1 for more than 17 years and has represented the City of Sparks on the Regional Transportation Commission. In addition, he has served on the boards for both the Sparks Heritage Museum and Disabilities Resources.
